If you've never used an eSIM before, the process can seem intimidating. But it's actually simpler than swapping a physical SIM card — and you can do it from your hotel room before you even leave for the stadium. This guide walks you through every step of setting up an eSIM for World Cup 2026 travel.

Step 1: Check If Your Phone Supports eSIM

  • iPhone: iPhone XS, XR, and all newer models (including iPhone SE 2nd gen and later)
  • Samsung Galaxy: S20 series and newer, Note 20 series, Z Flip/Fold series
  • Google Pixel: Pixel 3 and newer (all models)
  • Other Android: Most flagship phones from 2020 onwards (OnePlus 8+, Xiaomi Mi 10+, etc.)
  • Important: iPhones sold in mainland China do NOT have eSIM — they use dual physical SIMs
  • Important: Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to use third-party eSIMs

To check on iPhone: Settings → General → About → look for "Available SIM" or "eSIM". If you see "SIM Lock" information, contact your carrier to unlock before traveling.

Step 2: Choose Your eSIM Provider

  • Airalo — Best overall. 10M+ users, best app, 24/7 support. Uses T-Mobile (USA), Rogers (Canada), Telcel (Mexico).
  • Yesim — Best value. Often cheaper than Airalo for same data. Uses AT&T (USA), Rogers/Bell (Canada), Telcel (Mexico).
  • Drimsim — Best for international travelers. 197 countries, pay-as-you-go, data never expires.

Step 3: Install the eSIM on iPhone

  • Open Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
  • Tap "Use QR Code"
  • Point your camera at the QR code from your email or app
  • Tap "Add Cellular Plan" when prompted
  • Done — your eSIM is installed

Step 4: Install the eSIM on Android

  • Open Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → Add mobile plan
  • Tap "Scan carrier QR code"
  • Point camera at the QR code from your email
  • Tap "Add" when prompted

Step 5: Configure Your Settings

  • Set the eSIM as your "Primary" or "Data" line — this is for internet access
  • Keep your home SIM as the "Voice" or "Calls" line — for receiving calls/SMS
  • Turn OFF "Data Roaming" on your home SIM to avoid accidental roaming charges
  • Turn ON "Data Roaming" on your eSIM (this is required for it to work)

Do NOT wait until you land at the airport to buy your eSIM. Airport WiFi can be unreliable, and you'll want data immediately for Uber, maps, and messaging. Buy before you leave home.
